IVECO (Industrial Vehicles Corporation) was founded in 1975 through the merger of five major European industrial vehicle manufacturers: Fiat Veicoli Industriali (which included Officine Meccaniche and Lancia Veicoli Speciali), Unic, and Magirus-Deutz.

From 1991 to 1999, IVECO established strategic alliances with leading companies in the coach and bus sector and merged its coach and bus operations with RENAULT V.I., creating the joint venture IRISBUS, which became the second-largest manufacturer in Europe.

In 2003, IVECO acquired full ownership of IRISBUS.

In 2013, IVECO BUS was established as the brand dedicated to passenger transport.

A series of events is planned this year to celebrate this heritage while emphasizing the company’s forward-looking vision.

The 50th anniversary of IVECO's founding is also an opportunity to celebrate IVECO BUS and its role in the global history of passenger transport vehicles, a sector to which IVECO have always been committed.

2025: An Important Year to Celebrate the Heritage and Shape the Future

The celebrations for IVECO's 50th anniversary will be marked by "50xBeyond," a historic event organised by Iveco Group from 12 to 15 June at the OGR (Officine Grandi Riparazioni), Turin's new hub for innovation and art. This event will bring together institutional representatives, clients, investors, dealers, partners, and all stakeholders who have contributed to building the brand's history and shaping its future.

In addition to this important gathering, IVECO BUS is also preparing a programme of events for 2025 that link its rich history to its future ambitions. The aim is to drive change in the transport sector towards more sustainable mobility and a continually improved passenger experience.

·        The largest among French industrial sites, the Annonay factory, with a long tradition of coach and bus manufacturing, will celebrate its centenary in 2025.

·        The Vysoké Mýto site in the Czech Republic, the birthplace of the CROSSWAY range and the largest IVECO BUS production plant, will celebrate its 130 years of coach and bus manufacturing.

This year's celebrations not only commemorate half a century of success but also herald the beginning of a new chapter of innovation and progress, accompanied by a renewed ambition to transform passenger transport on a global scale. With customers at the centre of its priorities, IVECO BUS consistently develops new solutions that anticipate and meet evolving demands.

50 Years of global passenger transport history

Historical Strategic Alliances

·        The establishment of IVECO in 1975 was a major European event in the industrial vehicle sector. In 1991, IVECO expanded by integrating two Italian companies: Sicca, which specialized in coach and bus chassis, and Altra, which focused on electric and hybrid bus prototypes. That same year, IVECO acquired Pegaso, a Spanish leader originating from the Hispano-Suiza company, which is renowned for its cars, coaches, and trucks.

·        In 1999, IVECO and RENAULT V.I. joined forces to develop their coach and bus activities, establishing IRISBUS, the second-largest European manufacturer. This alliance brought together French, Italian, Spanish, Czech, and Hungarian expertise, uniting under one banner the brands IVECO, Pegaso, Orlandi, Renault, Heuliez, Ikarus, and Karosa.

·        In 2003, IVECO acquired RENAULT V.I.'s shares, becoming the sole shareholder and took control of IRISBUS.

·        In 2013, IVECO BUS, replacing the name IVECO-IRISBUS, became the new brand dedicated to passenger transport. This marked the beginning of a new phase of development within the Group's other international activities.

A Solid Legacy of Expertise, Know-How, and Innovations

Today, IVECO BUS draws upon a prestigious European heritage and the skills acquired over the years, enabling it to position itself as a key player in collective transport across Europe. The manufacturer’s commitment to driving change has guided every step of its journey, encouraging it to innovate and anticipate customer needs. The brand benefits from a rich heritage of remarkable technical achievements that have shaped the history of passenger transport vehicles. Among these achievements are:

• The development of "bi-mode" buses, which combine the environmental benefits of electric traction with the flexibility and autonomy of a thermal engine, was initiated in the 1980s by IVECO, featuring its bi-mode model derived from the IVECO 471 bus.

• As a pioneer in alternative energies, the manufacturer introduced the first natural gas buses in 1998 with the CityClass CNG, which followed the Iveco 490 TurboCity UR Green urban model.

• In 2003, at the UITP in Madrid, IVECO-IRISBUS was the first manufacturer to present an urban hydrogen bus with the City Class fuel cell. A model was used during the XX Winter Olympic Games in Turin in 2006 and the IX Winter Paralympic Games.

• The CROSSWAY range, launched in 2006, rapidly became the benchmark in the intercity segment, with over 65,000 units produced to date. The various models, designed for urban, intercity, and school transport, and available in all energy options, are manufactured in Vysoké Mýto (Czech Republic).

• In 2010, the manufacturer introduced new ranges of diesel-electric hybrid buses: the IRISBUS Citelis and HEULIEZ Access’Bus GX 327 and 427. Unveiled as a world premiere at the European Mobility Exhibition in Paris, these models, available in standard and articulated versions, offered significant savings in fuel consumption compared to their diesel equivalents, and were awarded "Innovation Trophies" in the "Energy-Environment" category.

• In 2013, IVECO BUS launched the URBANWAY, the manufacturer’s first urban bus to receive a Euro VI engine. It is available in all energy versions: CNG and hybrid, including trolleybus, as well as high-service versions named CREALIS.

• The manufacturer commenced its fully electric journey in 2015 with the launch of its battery model HEULIEZ GX 337 ELEC, marketed under the name IVECO E-WAY outside France. Since then, the electric range has grown with the introduction of the new generation battery models E-WAY, the urban hydrogen fuel cell bus E-WAY H2, the electric intercity models CROSSWAY Low Entry ELEC and CROSSWAY ELEC, along with the eDaily minibus. This offering is complemented by a suite of Energy Mobility Solutions services designed to support the deployment of electric fleets for both public and private customers.
