IVECO BUS and the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) will host a roundtable discussion on 19 November as part of the #FutureDriven Experience event. This roundtable, entitled "Accelerating the decarbonisation of public transport: strategies and enabling conditions for reaching 2030 and 2035 objectives", aims to share IVECO BUS's vision on the energy transition and highlight the importance of favourable enabling conditions for the competitiveness of the European bus industry.

The discussion, moderated by Thomas Fabian, Chief Commercial Vehicles Officer at ACEA, will focus on the challenges related to the decarbonisation of public transport, particularly in the urban bus segment, within the European Union. Exchanges will address the CO2 emission reduction targets set by Regulation (EU) 2024/1610, the enabling conditions necessary for the energy transition, and the competitiveness of European manufacturers in relation to international competition.

 “This round table provides a crucial platform for a constructive dialogue between the automotive industry and European policymakers. Together, we will be able to identify the solutions and conditions necessary to facilitate the transition to zero-emission public transport and achieve the goals set by Europe by 2030.” said Thomas Fabian.

Session 1: Decarbonisation of urban buses and its framework

The objective of achieving 90% zero-emission urban bus registrations by 2030 and 100% by 2035, as stipulated by the regulation, is at the heart of the discussions. Topics will include:

• The challenges of decarbonising public transport and the market response.
• The adequacy of the pace of electric bus adoption in Europe with the expectations of the European Commission.
• Member States priorities for transport decarbonisation.
• The European Parliament's position on climate policies and the concerns of the automotive industry.

 Session 2: The competitiveness of European bus manufacturers

This session will address the long-term competitiveness of EU bus manufacturers facing a growing impact of non-European manufacturers. Speakers will discuss the following points:

• The influence of international competition on achieving climate goals and maintaining a competitive market.
• The challenges posed by non-EU bus manufacturers to the European bus industry.
• The link between industry competitiveness and climate policy.
• The European Commission's consideration of the challenges linked to foreign competition, particularly in terms of price and access to raw materials, within the framework of the Clean Industrial Deal and the Automotive Deal.
• The relevance of possible customs duties on electric vehicles imported from out-of-Europe to protect the European bus industry.

This panel will highlight the crucial issues of the energy transition towards decarbonised public transport in Europe and the need for enabling conditions to support the competitiveness of the European industry in the face of international competition.
